Reform Panel Announces First Meeting
President
Bush's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform will hold its first public
meeting on February 16 in Washington, D.C. Panel members will focus on a
general overview on the current Tax Code and tax issues, according to
Jeff Kupfer, the panel's executive director. They will not solicit
public comments at this meeting but will in future ones, he added.
Participants invited to present information at the meeting will be
announced by the panel at a later date, Treasury spokesman Rob Nichols
said.
Chaired
by former Senators Connie Mack, a Florida Republican, and John B.
Breaux, a Louisiana Democrat, the panel will recommend tax reform
options to by July 31. They will "look at everything," Kupfer
explained, including a national sales tax and a value-added tax.
The
panel will also consider using the current Tax Code as a base for
reform, such as reducing current tax rates. Legislation resulting from
the panel's recommendations could be ready by autumn, Treasury Secretary
John Snow has indicated.
The
meeting will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International
Trade Center Amphitheater in Washington, D.C. Taxpayers wanting to send
written comments can submit them by mail to The President's Advisory
Panel on Federal Tax Reform, 1440 New York Avenue NW., Suite 2100,
Washington, D.C. 20220. An electronic address may be available in the
future. All written comments will be made available to the public.
